Joy in a Bottle

If you don’t know who Chris Tomlin is you should google him and listen to a few of his songs.  He is a Christian singer and he is awesome.  My friend Lynelle and I went to see him perform at the Mabee Center on Thursday night. I was expecting the same as you do for any concert.  Seeing  someone on state performing their music.  This was so much more than that. One of his songs says Indescribable, unbelievable, you put the stars in the sky…..He is talking about God.  But the indescribable, unbelievable are the first words that come to mind when I think of the concert.  It was like a giant church service with all denominations, all age groups, all ethnic groups worshipping together. The words were on the screen and meant to be sung along with.  Midpoint in the concert a preacher named Louis Giglio spoke and was phenomenal.   Now, I go to the Methodist Church and before that the Baptist Church and we don’t normally raise our hands in the service.  Mine were raised a good portion of the concert. It was just awe inspiring.  The only “down”side was when we were leaving the concert going down the stairs, I managed somehow to grab the handrail and pull it from its base and nearly wiped out a crowd of people as I caught myself from falling.  But then my mom didn’t call me Grace for nothing.
You know how at Christmas time you shop and shop and cook and cook and then the family gathering is finally there and all those months of preparation and planning are over in a few hours.  And you are left with a feeling of emptiness.  Well that’s how I felt on Friday.  After that every fiber of my soul worshipping God, Friday I woke up to the real world where people are rude and the realtor wants to show your house at the worse possible time and you still owe taxes and your yard needs mowed and for me you are alone and bored with nothing to do on a Friday night but flip channels and go to bed early.
Made me wish you could bottle some of the good feelings and bring them out when you needed them.
Here are some feelings I would bottle up for future use if I could:
The Chris Tomlin concert feeling…..wow, I wish I felt God’s presence that closely all the time
The performing my comedy feeling…its  a feeling where you just know that you are meant to be there, holding that mike, making that crowd laugh….invigorating
The my kids and granddogs just arrived…..excitement that the whole weekend I have Chris and Juliet and Puggy and Layla, or Andy and Toki to keep me company and hang out with
The Beginning of a new romance feeling……that excitement when the phone rings or your message beep sounds and you see that phone number pop up.
That weak in the knees feeling……from holding hands for the first time or that first kiss.  That feeling of attraction that makes you feel week in the knees…..kinda like when you almost hit a squirrel driving and you slam on your brakes…that adrenaline rush that goes thru you.
The birth of a child…  Indescribable, unbelievable, awe inspiring, joyful bliss
Spontaneous laughter….when you laugh so hard at something that your drink goes up your nose and your belly hurts for days because you laugh so hard.
Exercise over…that feeling you get when you have exercised when you didn’t want to and made it through the entire time or routine.
The house is clean, the laundry done, the dishes washed feeling……I love that. I sleep so much better when I know that I have nothing to do when I wake up but seize the day.  The clean car feeling is good too but not as nearly as good as the clean house feeling
The wake up in the night and see that you have 3 hours left before the alarm clock goes off feeling….awe, there is nothing like snuggling back under those covers and finishing that good dream
These are a few of my favorite things………Ok, what was that Sound of Music song with Julie Andrews?  When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad. I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad.
We have a lot of dog bites in life and bee stings.  Metaphorically speaking.   Well, I have had both actually.  The dog bite was from a vicious little 3 pound yorkie and I had to have the rabies shot series…(future blog about that experience) and bee stings (well when you climb up in a tree to hide during hide and seek, check for beehives before you do).  Seriously though there are some really badfeelings that I wouldn’t care to re-visit.  The feeling of guilt because you have done something you shouldn’t, the feeling of betrayal because you have just learned that your spouse/boyfriends is cheating on you, the feeling of profound loss when your mother dies,  the feeling of regret because you failed to come through on a promise, the feeling of Oh, no I’m late for work because I forgot to set the alarm, that feeling of is it time to go home yet and you still have 4 hours left at work, that feeling of overwhelming sadness when the kids and granddogs leave to go home.  The just received bad news from the doctor feeling.  The feeling of rejection because someone you really like doesn’t like you back.  The house is a mess and I just don’t feel like cleaning it right now.  The I shouldn’t have eaten the whole thing, now I feel miserable feeling.
I have a hankering to feel that my house is clean, the laundry and dishes done feeling.  Better get to that before it goes away!  Tomorrow I get to feel that “I love my Church and this is where I belong feeling”, the open road, sing at the top of my lung feeling  as I drive to Stillwater, the this is so fun to see classmates from 35 years ago feeling as I attend a class reunion meeting, and the Toki the grandbeagle and my son Andy’s good to see you mom feelings.  Its gonna be a great Day!
Bottle that feeling please.
